The Bloomberg Businessweek 2019—20 Best B-Schools ranking is based on 26,804 survey responses from MBA students, alumni, and recruiters in 2019 about their goals and experiences, as well as compensation and job-placement data from each school. The data we collected and extensive interviews at business schools around the world form the foundation of our coverage.

The Bloomberg Businessweek Best B-Schools ranking starts with a basic premise: The best judges of MBA programs are graduating students, recent alumni, and companies that recruit MBAs. And we want the best answers. Are schools offering what millennial students need? Are recent graduates able to leverage what they’ve learned and tap into their schools’ networks? What do businesses value most in recruits?
Based on extensive interviews with business school deans, professors, administrators, and analysts, more than 26,804 surveys of MBA students, alumni, and recruiters, as well as employment data provided by schools, we created four indexes: Compensation, Learning, Networking, and Entrepreneurship.
From there, we created a two-step methodology: Step one generates weightings for each index.
Rather than assign the indexes relative weightings ourselves, as most rankings systems do, we took an approach recommended by the business schools we spoke with: Let the stakeholders decide. So, in our surveys, we asked students, alumni, and recruiters what was most important to them. We provide a dozen options, such as “increase my earnings potential,” “build my professional network,” and “learn how to start or develop a business.” Survey takers rank the five most important. Their answers determine the weightings of each of our indexes.
Step two asks a range of survey questions on the business school experience, each mapped to a specific index. We also collect MBA Career Services & Employer Alliance (MBA CSEA) employment and compensation data from schools. From survey scores and the data, we calculate the overall ranking.
Our overarching goal is to present an interactive ranking that helps potential students make one of the most important personal and professional decisions of their lives.
